Strange Currencies

August 24

Good news and weird news this morning after meeting with Dr. Nik.

The weird – my cancer may actually be melanoma. My initial pathology report reads: “Metastatic carcinoma, favor pulmonary adenocarcinoma”. So apparently the lab in Boston didn’t do a specific stain for melanoma since everything pointed to lung cancer (have a call in to my friend Lisa in Seattle to explain that, but she said all along that the markers from pathology were consistent with lung but not definitive for origin). Nothing in the PET scan lit up in my lungs or other organs and the MRI shows nothing in my brain (remember how I said this blog was going to be funny). Slides are being sent to Emory to look for Melanoma markers which would confirm these suspicions.

So, still don’t know exactly what the cancer is but do know that whatever it is, the biological profile indicates that the treatment plan will be immunotherapy, not chemo. That is huge!

I start treatment on Tuesday and hope that you have a good weekend. I will.

Every person you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about.
Be kind.

Tony, you present your status so well with your calming delivery. Based on your comments, this seems to be a desired diagnosis, though I am woefully ignorant as to which of the different types of cancer are more treatable than others. I feel you will educate us all on this journey.
You and your family will continue to be in our thoughts.
    Thank you for incuding us.
